SPECIFICS OF REPRESENTING NATIONAL CULTURAL VALUES OF NORTH CAUCASUS NATIONS
IN MODERN JOURNAL PERIODICALS

Abstract

Background. Established at the beginning of the XXI century the trend of strengthening international relations with the republics of the North Caucasus actualized matter of learning the culture of the peoples inhabiting the specified region. In accordance with one of the priorities of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of coordination of multicultural relations the Media Institute is to accumulate positive interethnic interaction, a dialogue of cultures. To achieve the result it is necessary to examine the real picture display of a national culture in the media.
Materials and methods. Implementation of research tasks was achieved through analysis of publications in modern magazines «Notes of the Fatherland», «Continent », «Spark», «Friendship of Peoples», «Change», «Russian Reporter» on the basis of historical and functional, cultural and contextual approaches. Systematic analysis of the materials required to develop a new scientific method, involving the study of periodicals based on the synthesis of ethnology, culture and journalism.
Results. The author investigated the functionality of the periodical press in terms of representation of national cultural values of the peoples of the North Caucasus, identified the ways to achieve the principle of tolerant and intolerant ethnic interpretation of the processes occurring in society and reflected in the media.
Conclusions. The author analyzed journal periodicals from 2000 to 2013 and suggested that, despite strengthening of inter-ethnic relations, promotion of the idea of tolerance in today's society in relation to the North Caucasus, stereotypes and false associations continue to hold a strong position, thus creating unwanted variability in creating a portrait of the nation.
